The great emancipator

Gwen Marston has set quilters free. I recommend her book "Liberated Quiltmaking." It allows ordinary quilters (not just those art quilter types) to go for it! Sew, sew, sew. Make crooked seams, use queer color combinations, everything doesn't have to match. If someone points out a wonky quilt block to you, just say "Thanks for noticing. I meant it to come out that way."
I'm going to refer to her book for ideas for my next couple of quilts.

Gwen Marston is my Hero! Have you read Collaborative Quilting by Gwen and Freddy Moran? That one inspired me to make my two favorite quilts. It's a must have book.

Couldn't have been said better. I first saw Gwen Marston's work when I signed up at to go to my first retreat. I was intimidated by the beautiful applique and feared my work wouldn't be up to the level required to benefit from the class. What a mistake!
Gwen was a speaker at that retreat for one of the evening programs and her talk truly set my free. When she told us that it didn't matter whether a quilted cable made a perfect turn around a corner or just ran right off the edge . . . I knew I had found my leader *s*
I was fortunate enough to take a class with her at a later time and would sign up again and again just to hear her speak and see her gorgeous work.

Welcome to the Modern Quilting Ring! I am pretty new to it myself and it's been great.

I can't agree with you enough about Gwen Marston - like Joyce above said, Collaborative Quilting is a must have book - I wrote about it in one of my first blog entries. My fav quilting book of all time!

I have the Liberated String Quilts, in fact the quilt on my bed is inspired by that book. I also have the new one, but not the Liberated Quilting. I think it is out of print now.
