2 cups light brown sugar, packed
2 cups hot water
1/4 cup margarine
2 cups raisins
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons cold water
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
Boil together the sugar, 2 cups hot water, margarine and raisins. Allow to cool. Add baking soda dissolved in 2 teaspoons cold water. Sift together the flour and dry ingredients and mix all ingredients together well. Pour into a greased and floured 9 by 5 by 3 inch loaf pan. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 1 1/2 hours, or until cake tests done. Set pan on a rack for 10 minutes, then turn cake out to cool. Does not require frosting.

Eggcellent idea!! LOL
Growing up, my friends mom would make cake like this. She called it "War Cake" which I just suddenly understood to mean rations. I will have to try this and see if it is the same cake. I haven't thought about it in 20 years!
