Blogger's Quilt Festival 2009

Here is my free-pieced medallion quilt. The triangles are not even, they're free-pieced. I had no plan for this quilt, I just improvised as I made one border after another. The quilt was tied, not quilted. I must say a "Thank you" to Gwen Marston, as it is her wonderful books that inspired me. I did go off on my own tangent though and designed this quilt myself, so don't blame her for that, please. In her book "Freddy & Gwen Collaborate Again" she encourages sometimes tying quilts, instead of quilting. And it gives quilts an old-fashioned look, I think. I did give details about how I tie a quilt in previous posts. Now this quilt is draped over the back of my sofa, to be handy on cool evenings.

Very nice. I like your color choices.

Love it. I'm somewhat of a minimalist when it comes to surface quilting so I for one have no problem seeing a tied quilt.

What a wonderful, happy quilt; I'm sure you had fun creating it! I agree, sometimes tying is just the right way of finishing a piece.
I also love the books by Gwen & Freddy.

I'm going to have to get some of her books if it will help get results like your quilt! I love it!

I also love your blue jean quilt down below.

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

Great colors! What a coincidence - our quilt history study group just had a talk on medallion quilts. And you are right on the money saying you had no plan...typically these quilts would just evolve row by row. Nice job and I also agree with you about tied quilts. We sleep under a very large tied quilt during our cold winters.

I love the rich colors, it must be very relaxing that free piecing technique isn't it? I've never tried it.

While I hand quilt & machine quilt, one of my favorite quilts is a tied quilt. I used 2 of the highest loft batts and this one is sooooooo cozy! Love your quilt! And thanks for commenting on mine

It's such a bright, fun quilt! I've never tied a quilt myself (I'm quite new at this) but the ones that I've seen tied do give the quilt an "antique-y" feeling. Thanks for sharing this great quilt!

Well I've been so out of it that I didn't know there was another Blogger's Quilt Festival happening! This is a great quilt. My daughter actually prefers tied quilts to quilted ones. Could be because that's what she grew up with ;- )

Lovely quilt!! The fabric choices are great!!! I've never tied a quilt but I have 2 wool quilts in the works that may be candidates for tying.

So beautiful! I did a doll quilt for a swap I was in using free-pieced triangles and it was so much fun. Love the yellow in the center.
